Thunder Bass

Post: # 81094Post Frenchy »

Saw this for sale and decided to throw an offer at it, worst case scenario was going to buy a set of real brass Westone knobs. Turns out the bass is in great condition! I thought maybe the bass was sanded down and painted over, No ! the bass was just painted over, none of the hardware was even removed, just painted around ... Should I try to remove the paint or leave as be ??? Watcha think ?

As refinishes go it's not the worst I've seen (or the best).
But hey it's a Thunder. It shouldn't look weird. :toopid:

With luck he painted over the original finish and didn't strip it so it should just melt off with little paint remover.

I'd turn her back into something bee-u-tee-ful as she deserves.

Hey Barry!

I’m pretty certain that it was just painted over the original finish. The artist didn’t even remove the hardware before going Picasso on it.

The real problem in my mind is based on the headstock finish, this is one of those open grain oil finish. And since I am no longer able to see the open grain means that Picasso went thick on the paint to fill the open pours….

Don’t think that I will be able to remove the paint without stripping the original …

It’s a delema… couldsdnd it to Corsair but afraid he might paint it butter yellow like others he did !!! :-?

Might just keep on painting the bloody thing. Got a real good deal on it…

If it were mine I wouldn't worry too much about the headstock. The body however.....

Out would come the sandpaper. Then primer. I've always wanted to do a tequila sunrise finish. I have a Vibracell that I just love the fireburst finish. Close to a tequila sunrise.
